The Interviews

The People in Front of the Camera

Emily interviewing a young woman for a political documentary called The Space Between

Director Emily Arndt held interviews with our American neighbors and political experts, meeting them one-on-one across the East Coast, on the streets of Washington, DC for “woman on the street,” and in a focus group in York, PA.

The focus group questions are sourced from Living Room Conversations, an organization dedicated to connecting people across divides that provides free conversation guides on a variety of issues

Each interview with everyday Americans and experts teaches Arndt something new. She learns how divided Americans actually are and the complicated effects of the news media, social media, and human instincts on our political behavior.

The people interviewed are very diverse and represent many communities here in the United States. Black, Indigenous, and Other People of Color (BIPOC), white Americans, immigrant Americans, and LGBTQIA backgrounds are represented in this film, plus a variety of political beliefs.

We hear what it’s like to be in their shoes, how they’re misunderstood and what it feels like to be misunderstood. Each interviewee was chosen because they’re open to having conversations with people different from them. Will you be just as open?
